Julia Creek Refuse Facility

It has come to Council’s attention that residents are dumping refuse in the incorrect areas within the Julia Creek Waste Facility. It is a requirement under Council‘s Environmental Authority (EA) licence that refuse be separated into the following areas;

  • Tyres
  • Cars
  • Steel
  • Timber
  • Household Rubbish
  • Builders Rubble

Cameras are now installed to ensure compliance with the above matters. Should the cameras detect unauthorised dumping; offenders may be issued with an infringement notice and invoiced for the cost of relocation to the correct areas.

Queensland Plastic Bag Ban

The Queensland Government has passed the Waste Reduction and Recycling Amendment Bill 2017 which will forbid retailers from providing or selling single-use lightweight plastic shopping bags from 1 July 2018.

Unlike other states, biodegradable bags are included in the ban in Queensland, as these bags still pose a risk to aquatic animals, a critical part of Queensland’s marine ecosystem and tourism industry.

The ban will apply to all retailers and to the following bags:

  • lightweight plastic bags, less than 35 microns thick, with handles (‘singlet’ bags) including those deemed biodegradable, degradable or compostable.
