Joint funding for the construction of a new bridge over the Flinders River was announced 5th February 2016 with it being officially re-opened Friday 18th November on site.

The new bridge will ensure that the community and residents that live in this part of the Shire are more resilient in natural disasters.

The State Government provided $1,416,922 in funding through the 2015-16 Community Resilience Fund. The Project also contained a contribution from the Federal Government Bridges for Renewal Program to the value of $1,771,152 with Council funding the remainder with total cost of $3,542,306.

Officially re-opening the Punchbowl Bridge  was Government Senator Ian Macdonald , Mayor Belinda Murphy and representing the Premier & Deputy Premier was the  Assistant Minister of State Assisting the Premier Jennifer Howard.

Mayor Belinda Murphy stated, “ The funding received from both State and Federal Government were instrumental to the bridge going ahead this years and considerably lowered  the impact on ratepayers for this critical infrastructure. This new bridge will provide better access for residents and transportation of cattle without which would add a significant transport cost onto cattle producers.  The new structure has been enhanced to enable better flow of the river and increased height to shorten the length of time community members are cut off during wet season rain”

Senator MacDonald stated “Small communities like Julia Creek are the heart of regional Australia, and it’s reassuring to know that government investment in critical infrastructure is having a positive impact, not only on the lives of those who call this area home, but also for tourism and transport industries.
