Julia Creek Visitor Information Centre ‘At the Creek’ takes home Tourism Excellence Award

At the annual Queensland Information Centre Association (QICA) Conference and Awards held in Redcliffe in early October, the Julia Creek Visitor Information Centre (VIC) ‘At the Creek’ was recognised for their efforts in tourism by taking home the Tourism Excellence Award. The yardstick for this award is the tourism products, experiences and services VICs offer their guests along with evidence of a commitment to achieving excellence through involvement in the tourism industry and other initiatives.

QICA is the key industry body for Visitor and Tourist Information Centres in Queensland - currently, 100 Centres across the State are members of QICA making this an outstanding achievement for a small Outback Queensland VIC.

“Visitor Information Centres are on the frontline of tourism. We strongly encourage our guests to make our VIC their first port of call when arriving in Julia Creek so our friendly local staff can imbue their enthusiasm and knowledge for local and regional tourism products and experiences,” McKinlay Shire Council Mayor Belinda Murphy said.

The Julia Creek VIC has also crowned Runners Up in the Marketing Award for campaigns such as the online video campaign, “We know just the place” which dovetails off the current Tourism and Events Queensland campaign. Other marketing sophistications include the VIC’s ever-popular social media outlets which have a collective following of nearly 900% of the town’s population – evidence that this little VIC punches well above its weight.

“We try every single day to strive for excellence across customer service, marketing, planning and by offering authentic experiences so to be recognised in a state-wide award is very humbling,” McKinlay Shire’s Tourism Coordinator, Georgia Fleming said.
