Arts & Culture Facilities

Jan Eckford Centre

Newly refurbished in 2017, the Jan Eckford Centre is a creative space that includes an art gallery and workshop area for activities for both adults and children. The area includes a small kitchenette and tv facilities. The Jan Eckford Centre is located on Julia St in Julia Creek, behind the Julia Creek Civic Centre. The facility is available for hire - please contact Council's Administration Office to check date availability.

Cultural Workshop

The Cultural Workshop is a large shed for all messy craft activities such as pottery and mosaics. The Cultural Workshop is located on Julia St in Julia Creek, next to the Jan Eckford Centre.

Opera House

The Opera House showcases a large historical photo gallery of the life and times of Julia Creek and McKinlay Shire spanning the last 100 years. The Opera House opened on the same day as the Sydney Opera House. The Opera House is open Monday – Friday and is located on Julia St in Julia Creek, next to the Cultural Workshop.

Crafty Old School House

The Crafty Old School House is a community facility located in Wylde St, McKinlay. The Crafty Old School House is utilised for community meetings and activities and includes a kitchenette. The facility is available for hire - please contact Lyn Warn for bookings.

Museums

Duncan McIntyre Museum

The Duncan McIntyre Museum is operated in conjunction with the Julia Creek Historical Society. Located at 63 Burke St Julia Creek, the museum displays a Willy’s Jeep Truck, machinery, moon rocks, fossils from the Eromanga Sea and much more. Discover the significance of the wool industry and telecommunications challenges. Entry is free.

Centenary Museum

The Centenary Museum is located in Centenary Park, McKinlay, behind the McKinlay Library. Historical story boards which feature the history of McKinlay and other old relics are on display from cattle properties. April 2012 marked 150 years since explorer John McKinlay discovered the area. A statue of “Big John” was erected to commemorate the event and can be seen in Middleton Street, across from the Park.
