McKinlay Shire Council is urging all residents and road users to be aware of ongoing roadworks as a major disaster recovery program rolls out across the region.
Following the widespread impacts of flooding in McKinlay Shire in January 2025 and February 2024, Council has secured more than $58 million in Australian and Queensland Government funding under the joint Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA). This vital investment will see more than 1,200 kilometres of local roads undergoing restoration works.
Already, more than 292 kilometres of unsealed roads have been repaired, helping to restore critical access for rural properties, freight, and emergency services.
Council would like to highlight the difference between emergency works and the upcoming reconstruction works. Emergency works were undertaken immediately after the disaster to restore safe access, these are temporary measures. The reconstruction phase is now underway and will deliver long-term, engineered repairs to return our roads to a resilient, pre-disaster standard.
Five key contractors have been engaged to deliver this extensive program, and works are now visible across the shire.
Cr Fegan said – “We remind all our road users to stay safe and keep an eye out for roadworks crews across the region. Please be mindful of current road conditions and always prioritise the safety of our road workers.”
Emergent Works have been completed on the unsealed networks and are currently on sections of the sealed network: including Julia Creek Taldora Road and Toolebuc McKinlay Road.
Reconstruction Works are currently underway in the following locations:
- South East – Yorkshire Nelia Road
- South - Eulolo McKinlay Road, then Broadlands Access Road
- South West – Elrose Barnsdale Road, then Bull Creek Strathfield Road
- North West – Old Normanton Road 2, then Julia Creek Taldora Road
- North East – Old Nelia Road, then Euraba Access Road.
To help the community stay informed, Council has launched an interactive Google Map, showing the location and progress of all DRFA roadworks. This map is updated regularly and can be accessed via:

Council thanks all residents and road users for their continued patience and support as we rebuild our road network.
