Recovery Health Information
Following recent flooding, standing water and saturated ground across the Richmond Shire may lead to an increase in sandflies, mosquitoes and other biting insects, as well as heightened health risks associated with post-flood environments.
Council reminds residents to take the following precautions:
Insect-borne health risks
Floodwaters create ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes and sandflies, which can cause:
- skin infections and allergic reactions
- increased risk of mosquito-borne illnesses
Protect yourself by:
- using insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin
- wearing long sleeves, long pants and enclosed footwear
- avoiding outdoor activity at dawn and dusk where possible
- ensuring doors, windows and screens are intact
Flood water hazards
Floodwaters may contain bacteria, chemicals and debris.
Please avoid:
- contact with floodwater wherever possible
- allowing children or pets to play in pooled or stagnant water
Melioidosis
Melioidosis is a serious illness caused by a germ that lives in soil.
Symptoms include fever, headache, cough and cold shivers.
Clean-up safety
During clean-up activities:
- wear gloves, boots and protective clothing
- wash hands thoroughly after contact with flood-affected areas
- seek medical advice if you develop rashes, fever, or infected bites
If you experience severe reactions to insect bites or feel unwell following exposure, seek medical advice promptly.
