Whilst unseasonal winter rain in the North-West since last Thursday has been a welcome sight for many graziers, it has caught a lot of travellers by surprise during peak tourist season.

Overnight falls in Julia Creek topped 77mm rendering the free RV Site adjacent to Julia Creek out of use until the rain ceases. The Julia Creek Caravan Park is also frequently booked out in advance with McKinlay Shire Council Mayor, Belinda Murphy, strongly urging visitors to telephone them on 4746 7108 prior to arrival.

Long-term data (1912-2011) available through the Bureau of Meteorology denotes a July average of just 7.7mm of rain in Julia Creek.

“We have spoken to many of our neighbours in the surrounding towns on the Overlander’s Way and they are experiencing similar problems with travellers and their vans displaced for the night due to this unseasonal rain.” McKinlay Shire Mayor Belinda Murphy said.

“All travellers should make telephone calls in advance to their destination to ensure that they have a caravan park site or a roof over their head for the night before getting on the road,” Mayor Murphy added.

Prior to travelling, please visit the Department of Transport and Main Roads’ website at 131940.qld.gov.au to check for road closures.
