The McKinlay Shire has a strong Arts and Historical network. Council ensures this network is supported through various avenues of financial and in-kind support as per the Corporate Plan and Cultural Policy. Many organisations run workshops and activities throughout the year. Please contact the relevant art group for further information.

Open 7 Days a week April - September or Monday to Friday October - March, in Julia Street, Julia Creek. Current Exhibition – Centenary Photos.

Julia Creek Historical Society
An active society ensuring the integrity and recording of historical information in the Shire. The Society has released many short books and played a large part in the Julia Creek Centenary Book production. For further information please contract Mrs Shirley Eckford (President) on 47467233.

McKinlay Shire Cultural Association
An association that encourages participation in cultural activities within McKinlay Shire.

Crafty Old School House
The Crafty Old School House group meet at the old McKinlay School House on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Activities include tennis, health information and UFO afternoons (Un Finished Objects). This is a day for social gathering and to finish off/get help with any craft items that you may be working on. Crafts include patchworking, horn and silver smithing, scrapbooking and card making. The group organises a craft workshop weekend once a year. The group is always looking for new craft ideas to try! Julia Creek Potters
Mrs Shirley Eckford has been a committed potter for the last and runs regular pottery classes at the Cultural Workshop in Julia Creek. Pottery classes operate from April – December.

Julia Creek Quilters
A band of local women sharing the joy of quilting. As part of the Centenary Celebrations the Julia Creek Quilters have embarked on a project to complete a Centenary Quilt. The quilt has been placed on display in Council's administration centre. The group meet on the second Saturday of every month at the Jan Eckford Centre in Julia Creek. Julia Creek Arts Council
Julia Creek Arts Council is an incorporated group that falls under the banner of Arts Link Qld (previously Queensland Arts Council). Any one is welcomed as a member of Arts Council after paying either single or family membership. Arts Council is responsible for bringing exhibitions and performances to the town and also workshops and community projects like the mosaic chair in the central park in town. Arts Council organises events for everyone from children to the elderly and is always interested in beginning new and exciting artistic adventures. Each year Arts Council holds in conjunction with ICPA Julia Creek branch a children’s Art competition in the areas of painting/drawing, sculpture and craft. Prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd for each age group in each category. The winning painting/drawing is framed and hung in the McKinlay Shire Civic Centre each year. This is normally held in October to co-inside with Mt Isa School of the Air Mini School week. A wine and cheese night is also held during this time to open the yearly exhibition that is sourced for everyone. The children’s Arts Competition is also shown at the same time.
